Shaft length is measured from the top of the transom bracket mounting surface to the anti-ventilation plate, and it must match the boat's transom height — not the other way around. Getting it wrong is one of the few rigging errors that cannot be corrected with an adapter.
The standard lengths
| Designation | Nominal length | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| Short (S) | 15" | Small tenders, jon boats, inflatables |
| Long (L) | 20" | The most common transom height across recreational hulls |
| Extra-long (X) | 25" | Offshore hulls, bracketed transoms, many V6 and V8 installations |
| Ultra-long (U/XX) | 30" | Large offshore platforms, stepped hulls and setback brackets |
Measuring the transom
Measure vertically from the top of the transom, at the centreline where the engine will mount, down to the lowest point of the hull bottom at the transom. That measurement is the transom height. Match it to the nominal shaft length.
A shaft that is too short ventilates in turns and loses thrust as the propeller draws air down from the surface. A shaft that is too long increases drag, hurts efficiency and top speed, and puts the gearcase at greater risk in shallow water.
What else changes with shaft length
This is the part that catches people out on a repower. Changing shaft length does not only change the exhaust housing. Depending on the family, it also changes:
- Driveshaft and water tube
- Shift shaft and shift linkage
- Wiring harness and control cable lengths
- Steering cable or hydraulic hose runs
- Trim and tilt mounting geometry on some models
If you are converting an engine between shaft lengths rather than ordering the correct configuration from new, request a rigging list rather than ordering components individually — a conversion is normally more expensive than most buyers expect, and it is worth pricing both routes.
Setback brackets and jack plates
Mounting the engine on a setback bracket or jack plate raises the effective transom height, frequently by 5" to 10". An engine on a bracket usually requires the next shaft length up. Confirm the bracket's rise before specifying, not after.
