Outboard engines are built to the requirements of the market they are destined for. An engine carrying a familiar model designation is not automatically a United States-specification engine, and this distinction has legal and practical consequences that are worth understanding before you order.
What can differ
- Emissions configuration. Calibration, evaporative-emissions provisions and after-treatment can differ between markets, because the certification regimes differ. - Certification and labelling. A United States-market engine carries the emissions labelling required for that market. An engine built for another market generally does not. - Instrumentation and control standards. Gauge units, network standards and control compatibility vary by region. - Documentation and warranty territory. Manufacturer warranty is normally territorial. An engine supplied outside its intended market may carry limited or no manufacturer warranty coverage there.
Why we catalogue them as separate records
On this site, a United States-specification engine and an international-specification engine are distinct catalogue records even when the model designation is identical. They have separate stock keeping units, separate availability and separate compliance fields. This is deliberate: treating them as one record is exactly how the wrong unit ends up on a container.
Compliance data is recorded, never inferred
We do not infer emissions eligibility from a model name. Where our records do not carry documented evidence of a specific compliance status for a specific configuration, the field reads "not evaluated" rather than asserting a status we cannot support. If you require an engine eligible for sale or registration in the United States, or specifically in California, tell us at enquiry stage and we will confirm what documentation is available for the exact configuration before quoting.
California in particular
California operates its own emissions regime in addition to federal requirements. An engine that is federally acceptable is not automatically acceptable in California. Do not assume that a United States-specification engine is a California-eligible engine — confirm the specific configuration.
What this means for buyers
If you are importing into a regulated market, the burden of establishing compliance sits with the importer. Ask for the specification and the documentation, in writing, before the goods ship. We would rather answer that question at quotation stage than have an engine held at a border.
